Diet and Cancer Risk

Does diet have a role in cancer? 

 

Certain foods, nutrients and undesirable dietary habits have been linked with the development of cancer.  In general, you can lower your risk of cancer - and improve your overall well-being, too - by choosing a healthy, varied diet and eating in moderation.  For maximum benefit follow these nutritional guidelines in combination:

  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.
  • Eat more high-fiber foods, such as whole grain cereals, pasta, bread, fruits and vegetables
  • Reduce your intake of fat, which is found in oils, fatty meats, whole-fat dairy products, sauces, gravy, and many salad dressings and desserts.
  • Limit foods that are salt-cured, smoked or nitrate-preserved, including bacon, charcoal-grilled foods and sausage.

Can vitamins reduce cancer risk?

 

Scientists have found a relationship between cancer and a lack of vitamins A and C.  Some studies show these two vitamins may provide some protection against certain types of cancer.  You can be sure of getting enough A and C by eating two helpings of dark green and/or yellow-green vegetables and yellow-orange fruits every day.

 

 

Does drinking alcoholic beverages cause cancer?

 

Certain cancers occur more often among heavy drinkers, and that risk magnifies greatly in those who also use tobacco. To lower your risk, drink alcoholic beverages sparingly, if at all. Moderate consumption is considered to be one or two drinks per day.

 

 

Are obese people more susceptible to cancer?

 

Studies clearly demonstrate that obesity (being extremely overweight) increases the risk of dying from certain cancers.  Even people who are somewhat overweight have a greater chance of developing some types of cancer. To lose weight, consume a healthy diet low in calories and fat, and increase your physical activity.  If you are obese, consult with your physician before beginning a weight-loss or exercise program, or contact our nutrition counselors at the FMH Wellness Center.
