Pain Relief Options

One of the most thrilling and gratifying experiences in your life will be the birth of your baby. This significant event should be made as safe and pleasant as possible for you and your baby. Your obstetrician, anesthesiologist and nurse want to help you reach this goal. Each woman's labor is unique to her and the amount of labor pain you feel will differ from other women in labor. The following are options available for your pain relief:

  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Local anesthesia
  • Analgesics
  • Epidural and/or spinal anesthesia
  • General anesthesia (only for emergency surgical births)

Please refer to the Anesthesia & You; Planning your Childbirth pamphlet in your preadmission packet. The BirthPlace provides anesthesiologists on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
