Outpatient diagnostic testing
I am having a diagnostic test performed as an outpatient
Step One . . .
From your Physician’s Office
Your doctor gave you "orders" (usually written on a prescription) for some outpatient diagnostic procedures to be performed.
There are numerous tests and procedures provided by FMH that are considered to be Outpatient Services. These procedures are, for the most part, non-invasive - or minimally invasive - diagnostic tests that do not require any form of anesthesia or recovery time. Examples include: Laboratory testing, Cardio-Pulmonary Studies, Stress Tests, X-rays and other imaging procedures, Physical, Occupational, or Speech/Language therapies.
These outpatient procedures may be performed at the hospital or at FMH's other facilities such as Mt. Airy Health Services, FMH Crestwood, FMH Rose Hill or FMH Urbana. Regardless of the nature of your specific diagnostic testing procedure, the first step is the same:
The Scheduling Department: 240-566-3400
The Scheduling Department has been established to provide one-stop-shopping for all of your scheduling needs. One phone call to the Scheduling Department will:
- arrange ALL of your pre-admission testing and/or procedures,
- Schedule your appointment times,
- Identify the testing facility location that is the most convenient for you, AND;
- Begin gathering the necessary personal information for admissions and insurance forms
There are a number of locations that perform pre-admission testing for FMH. Use the links below to find a map directing you to the facility you have selected to perform your tests:
If you have chosen a facility that is not affiliated with FMH to perform your pre-admission testing:
- You MUST request that the results of your Pre-Admission Testing be faxed to your doctor.
- If you need to change your appointment times, you will have to call to cancel your own appointments.
No matter where your tests have been scheduled to be performed, please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled time. In those cases where no specific time has been assigned for your particular test to be performed, you may arrive at the site at your convenience.
Please be sure to bring your doctor's orders - and your insurance information - with you to your testing site.
Some Important Reminders . .
Food and Liquid Consumption
Some tests establish a base-line level in a FASTING state. If you are having a test performed that requires you to be in a fasting state: DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING after midnight. Do NOT chew gum OR suck on a piece of candy. The only exception would be a sip of water if you are instructed to take your medications. Eating solid foods or drinking even a small amount of liquid could cause your tests to be POSTPONED.
If you are taking any medication, ask your physician in advance if you should take your medicine the morning of your test or procedure. Contact your doctor for advice if you are taking any blood thinners, aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication.
What You Should Leave at Home:
Money and Valuables
Please do not bring any of the following with you to the hospital:
We strongly recommend that you bring only a minimum amount of cash with you to the hospital, and that you leave all other valuable items at home. If it is necessary to bring valuables with you, the Cashier's Office can store smaller items in the hospital safe. When you arrive for admission, notify your admissions nurse and arrangements will be made to place your items in the safe.
